📿 Nirjala Ekadashi Katha - Bhima's Story (कथा)

English Translation

During the Mahabharata era, Bhima, the second of the Pandava brothers, had an enormous appetite and could not remain without food even for a single day. When Yudhishthira, Arjuna, and other brothers observed Ekadashi fasts, Bhima would become restless as he could not observe the fast.

One day, Bhima approached Lord Krishna and said, "O Lord! I cannot observe Ekadashi fasts like my brothers. It is impossible for me to remain hungry. Is there any way by which I can also receive the benefits of Ekadashi observance?"

Lord Krishna replied to Bhima, "O Bhima! If you can observe just one Ekadashi fast in the entire year, you will receive the benefits of all Ekadashis. The Shukla Ekadashi of Jyeshtha month is called 'Nirjala Ekadashi.'"

"On this day, you must neither eat food nor drink water. This fast is very difficult, but its benefits are also immense. Whoever observes this fast receives the benefits of all 24 Ekadashis of the year."

Bhima accepted Lord Krishna's advice and observed the Nirjala Ekadashi fast. Since then, this Ekadashi has become famous as 'Bhima Ekadashi' or 'Nirjala Ekadashi.'"
